Last Son: The arrival

A colossal crash was heard, and the mountains began to crumble. Large fissures formed and devoured the structures whole. The oceans began to boil, and the sky began to fall. The air was pernicious to breath and the sounds were unendurable. This was the beginning of the end, but this was not Earth. This fate fell upon the planet Krypton.

Jor-El, a wise elder of the planet Krypton had foreseen this preordain. He tried many times to warn the other elders and scholarly men of Krypton. Time and time again his attempts failed. For the people of Krypton were very intelligent, and surely they or there computers would have picked up on this issue prior to it’s origination. “Fate always has the upper hand”, stated Jor-El in his final attempt to warn the nobles of Krypton of their certain doom.

Instead the revered elders mocked once again, and laughed at his techniques of bad science. They forbid him of speaking anymore on the subject. And just to make sure no one else would fear Jor-El’s prediction, they rejected his plan to leave the planet’s gravitational pull. “Jor-El”, the renowned scientist Cree-Alou said in a stern voice, “neither are you or your wife Lara allowed to leave this planet.

Lara was shocked to here these rulings from Jor-El’s mouth. She could only think to herself, “How could the decisive power of Krypton, not humble itself for a moment to listen to her husbands findings?”. Surely the powers that be, could recognize that the past sudden changes in their environment were not natural. This was Krypton, a planet that convenes the knowledge of all the galaxies. A planet whose species have evolved further and greater than almost all others. And yet it was the people of Krypton who had brought this fate among themselves.

In their great search for more knowledge and there appetite to secure everything with science, the elders and wisest men of Krypton forgot to please the nature of their own planet. Jor-El had found that in earlier attempts to harness the energy given off by the planet’s core, the scientist had actually caused a rupture in Krypton’s magnetic field. He found that the data used for the solar powered containment field (which was used to store the raw energy extracted from the core) were actually programs for use under a yellow sun. This was a very considerable mistake on the part of the planners for this project, because the planet itself resided in the orbit of a red sun.

The red sun, the very thing that helped all things Kryptonian evolve to what that are today, was the first thing omitted from the wisest of men’s minds on Krypton. Because they had overlooked the settings on the containment field, the raw energy was able to escape and cause a fracture in the magnetic field that encased Krypton. The rupture or tear was to immense for nature to seam up. It was this information that caused Jor-El to start raising alarms and warning the Kryptonian elders. “When the scrupulous men closed their ears off my dear”, Jor-El said to his wife in an almost enlightened voice, “they sealed every ones fate except for our son’s.” A glimmer of hope came across Lara’s face, for she knew what he was saying.

In the closing hours of Krypton’s permanence, the planet began to shake with tremendous earthquakes and the temperatures propelled very swiftly. Quickly the people of Krypton became filled with fear. They had no warning of the coming events. And as the elders set high in the sanctuaries, they could do nothing more then sit and think, “We should have listened, we should have researched Jor-el’s findings.”

Jor-El, not being a spiteful man could only feel pity. Not just for the lives he could have saved, but for the men that doomed him and his wife Lara. Even though he was feeling clemency for the elders, he could not help but have a little elation. When the wise men passed there ruling on Jor-El and Lara’s fate, they seemed to overlook something yet again, Lara and Jor-El’s baby boy Kal-El. Because of the slight turn of fortune, Jor-El knew what he had to do.

Although not fully confident in his plan, Lara knew that something had to be done in order to save her only child from her and his fathers inevitable death. She knew that his plan had some major risks, but what more could she do to ensure safety for her son. So Lara, in the final minutes of Krypton’s existence placed her son into Jor-El’s last experiment, a plasma matrix. Or as he liked to call it a “Birth Matrix”.

This was a design that had been ongoing in the House of El for many generations. A pod that could be placed into a small interstellar transport and could sustain life as well as protect it through long space travel. Jor-El knew that this would be the only way his son would be able survive through the rigors of spaceflight. It had been documented to be very hard for newborns and even toddlers to be re-animated after light speed travel. In fact only fully grown Kryptonian men had ever left Krypton’s planetary system. This pod would allow Kal-El to travel through space without being de-animated and it was small enough to fit into crafts not usually used for living freight. Which in turn would also allow for the ship to slip past the outer Kryptonian defense ring.

The time had come, even Jor-El and Lara had a hard time breathing let alone standing while their home planet was literally imploding on itself. So they finished the final program entries and sealed the vessel closed. The ship then raised into an inverted stance, and a countdown began in small Kryptonian numbers on the launch pads holographic display. “Seems as though we are in need of more than just the help of science my love.” stated Jor-El to Lara. At this point Lara looked deep into the sky above her and did something no Kryptonian had done for millions of years, she prayed. “May the gracefulness of a higher power guide my son and deliver him into safety.” Just as she ended her plea, the final number appeared and the ship took off without aversion. As they watched the craft fade into the sky a large construct collapsed in front of them, “Good bye my son Kal-El, we will be with you throughout your vitality.” And then without any warning planet Krypton exploded.

As the spaceship raced away from the massive atomic explosion it began it’s entry into the Kryptonian Defense Ring. This was a circle of weaponry satellites on the outskirts of Krypton’s galaxy. It solely was in charge of all ships leaving and coming into the planet’s boundaries. The defense system awakened and asked the ships circuitry who sent the ship, what it was carrying, and where was it headed. The ship replied to the ring. “Jor-El of Krypton -2342112 registered this flight. It continued on transmitting that this conveyance carried experimental equipment set for the MilkyWay galaxy. The defense ring granted clearance for the ship to continue on corse.

The ship then began to change it’s settings, and the “birth matrix” came online. Just as planned the ship began it’s jump into lightspeed, but before it charged enough energy the defense ring that it had just cleared was bombarded with an atomic wave. The ship became aware of the incoming danger and it went right to maximum power. In doing so it created a vortex of such power that as it raced off at the speed of light it actually gathered small fragments of the orphaned child’s exploded home planet For three years the freight barreled through space carrying with it a comet like tail made of the very last remaining remnants of the planet Krypton.

During the extensive flight computer generated voices of Kal-El’s mother and father were used to sooth and educate this now toddler sized child. The matrix had worked perfectly. They child was completely healthy and under very minimal stress. Jor-El’s final experiment was a triumph. Kal-El was learning instincts, colors, shapes, smells, textures and all while being confined in the space of his pod.

As the ship came closer to the MilkyWay galaxy, it began to show Kal-El images of life on another planet, one that was much like the early days of Krypton. It showed him tall trees and rolling mountains. It showed him pictures of birds flying and fish swimming along the banks of vast oceans. The planet that it was showing young Kal-El was Earth. “May you live a long life here Kal-El”, the computer generated voice of Jor-El narrated to the young child.

The ship had onboard many programs to ensure Kal-El’s continued education, and his protection. The program that held all of the enlightening and instructing media, was an exact replica of the Kryptonian central computer. This was the very computer that was housing every last piece of knowledge that the Kryptonians held until there demise. Among the many security and protection programs, was a program that would ensure that none of this data or the ship would ever fall into human hands. Above all programs there was one that would standout to be more important than any of the others, and that was the programmed essence of Jor-El and Lara. The actual thought processes and spirit of each were downloaded into the pod, so that Kal-El would be able to literally know and learn from his mother and father.

Now in the boundaries of the yellow stars gravitational pull, (the same star that was sun to the planet Earth) the ship powered down to 75% and dropped below the speed of light. As programmed the “birth matrix” went offline and all of it’s radiation shields were lowered. The vehicle needed these shields because of it’s travel trough deep space. Jor-El was aware of the high radiation levels in deep space, and how any matter that goes through these swells of radiation are forever mutated and chemically changed. He did not want any chance of these things happening to his son, so he prepared accordingly.

Right when the ship lowered it’s shields the child became very hyperactive, something was effecting the boy. That something was what Jor-El had been hoping for since the conception of this plan. The ship continued on course to the third planet of the solar system. More and more the boy grew robust with energy. Lara’s program took on settling the child’s un-calm nerves and put his energy to useful work by playing counting games in Earth written number forms. The program continued throughout the final hours of travel. When the ship had reached Earth’s atmosphere Lara put Kal-El to sleep, in hopes that he would not awake until after the ship had safely landed upon the planet.

When the ship came out of lightspeed, the remaining and now radiated fragments of Krytpon were catapulted toward the Earth. The people on the western hemisphere of the planet were terrified as meteorites were pelting there homes and businesses. On that day well over forty meteorites were seen and accounted for in central North America alone. Many religious leaders called for repent, that this was the end of days. They were wrong though, for this was not an end but a new beginning.

Alongside a rural road on the outskirts of a Kansas farm town, a man and his wife were outside their pickup fixing a flat tire. The two were just getting back in town from a trip to Denver to purchase animal medications, when a meteorite grabbed there attention. The woman was driving the vehicle when she saw the strange site crossing the sky. “Hey,hey,hey,... keep your eyes on the road.” the man yelled to his wife. But it was to late she had drove them right into a drainage ditch.

Soon after they got they truck out of the ditch, they realized that the rear tire was leaking. “Martha,” he asked his wife with a smile. “Do you think you can pull this thing off the side of the road safely this time?” She replied in a very strong tone, “Jonathan Kent, that wouldn't have happened if I had not been distracted by that meteorite. And if you wouldn’t have been sleeping you would have heard on the radio that these things are coming down all over the place.” The man was astounded when he turned up the radio news broadcast. “You mean you weren’t fibbing?” he asked. She turned to him with a cold stare, “I told you what I saw, now shut up and put the spare on before another one drops right on us.

Before Martha cold get both feet out the door to help Jonathan with the jack another meteorite dropped out of the sky and crashed in the corn field adjacent from the trucks side. “Oh my...” Martha screamed. “What in Sam Hell, that must have been the biggest meteorite to hit Earth in a long time”, Jonathan stated in a extremely strained voice. The couple began to slowly move towards the impact spot, but they stopped just short when they heard it give off a noise. “Martha stay back, I’ll go check it out. No need in injuring both of us”. She looked at him and then made the gesture of bowing, like she was in the presence of a great Chinese emperor. “Is there any thing else you think a woman can’t do?” she snarled back. “Yeah, catch fish” he retorted.

Jonathan made his way towards the meteorite and Martha was headed back to the truck. As he got closer though he started to get the feeling that this was not a meteorite. “Martha” he called. “Do not, I repeat do not come over here.” He proceeded to walk closer but again he heard a strange noise so he froze. The meteorite began to open, and Jonathan trembled in fear. At first he could not believe his eyes. He was seeing a hand reaching out of what he thought was maybe a meteorite, but clearly now he was realizing that this was indeed a ship. A young boy then fully emerged from the ship and all Jonathan could do was yell to his wife Martha.

Martha could not see where her husband was standing, and this frustrated her. She could not decide to run to the site or drive off on a flat tire to get help. Her curiosity got the best of her. She took off running to her husband, but to her surprise he was not in danger. Instead she found Jonathan trying to befriend a toddler. “Where are his parents, and where are his clothes?” she asked. “I don’t know Martha, but I bet we can find some answers in that.” as he pointed toward the ship. Martha turned to look and was completely amazed by what she saw. An egg shaped ship stood in front of her. Inside she could see a red blanket, she grabbed it and wrapped it around the naked toddler. When she looked down at the boy again she saw something she hadn’t noticed before, a diamond shaped encrusted number eight in yellow was graphed onto one side of the blanket. “What do you think it means Jonathan?”
